Review on Ayurveda treatment modalities for Mutra Ashmari (Urolithiasis)

Urolithiasis (urinary calculi) is a common health issue all over the world. Urinary calculi are solid accretion found in urine which can be vary in size & shape. Mostly stones can be passed through urination. But if they become larger, they can’t eliminate normally. In Ayurveda urolithiasis can be correlate with Muthra ASHMARI. It is one of the ASHTAMAHAGADA mentioned in Ayurveda. There are various types of ASHMARI described in Ayurveda texts.

This study finds out most effective pharmacodynamic properties of frequently used ingredients of each type of ASHMARI separately which are mentioned in Vrihatrai. Charaka SMAHITHA, SUSRUTHA SMAHITHA & ASHTANGA HRIDAYA SMAHITHA are known as Vrihatrai in Ayurveda. Those texts were used as the sources of this study. 

To accomplish the objectives SMAHITHA were referred thoroughly & the drugs used for each type of ASHMARI were collected. Among them frequently used 5 drug were selected from each type of ASHMARI; VATHAJA, PITTAJA, KAPHAJA. Also 5 drugs which were mentioned under both VATHAJA & PITTAJA ashmari were selected respectively.     

Properties of those drugs were analyzed through tables & figures. Among frequently used 5 drugs for VATHAJA ASHMARI prominent rasa was THIKTHA RASA, GUNA was LAGHU GUNA, VEERYA was USHNA VEERYA & VIPAKA was KATU VIPAKA. Among frequently used 5 drugs for PITTAJA ASHMARI prominent rasa were MADHURA & THIKTHA rasa equally, GUNA were LAGHU & ROOKSHA GUNA equally, VEERYA was USHNA VEERYA & VIPAKA was KATU VIPAKA. Among frequently used 5 drugs for KAPHAJA ASHMARI prominent RASA WAS KATU RASA, GUNA was LAGHU GUNA, VEERYA was USHNA VEERYA & VIPAKA was KATU VIPAKA. Among frequently used 5 drugs for both VATHAJA & PITTAJA ashmari prominent rasa were THIKTHA & MADHURA rasa equally, GUNA was SNIGDHA GUNA, VEERYA was SHEETHA VEERYA & VIPAKA was KATU VIPAKA.

These properties were effective for curing ASHMARI by balancing vitiated DOSHA respectively.
