THE ROLE OF ACUPUNCTURE IN BRONCHIAL ASTHMA-A LITERATURE REVIEW

Asthma is one of the most common severe disease with a multi etiological factors which is characterized by airflow limitation, airway hyper responsiveness to a range of stimuli and inflammation of the bronchi affecting approximately 300 million people worldwide. Asthma reduces patients’ quality of life, leads to substantial disability and brings a heavy economic burden to patients and their families. Asthma is among the leading causes of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Acupuncture is an important component in traditional Chinese medicine which prevent and treat disease by puncturing certain points on the body with needles. The uses of Acupuncture in the management of asthma have been extensively reported over the last few decades. This Literature review provides a general overview of the Western and Chinese concepts about asthma, Principles of Acupuncture in Asthma Management, Effectiveness of Acupuncture in Asthma Management and use of acupuncture in the management of asthma.
