EFFECT OF ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENT FOR DYSARTHRIA – A CASE STUDY

Dysarthria can be defined as a motor speech disorder as well as group of neurological disorder. Brain and nervous system damages can be divide into 2 types; Congenital type and acquired type. Dysarthria is characterized by abnormalities in speed, strength, range, steadiness, tone or accuracy of movements the required for breathing, articulatory aspect of speech production. And main treatment for dysarthria patients are speech therapy, surgery and some medication according to their condition. But none of these treatment does not respond to cure this condition and spend more time to it. Acupuncture is a one of the effective treatment for dysarthria. It takes short time period, easy to approach, low budget, and provide good result. Therefore, the aims of this research is to find out the effective treatment protocol on acupuncture for dysarthria. Case study method has been selected to explore on this topic. The OPD patient attended to Sir Anton Jayasuriya memorial hospital was selected, treatment five needle protocol was developed accordingly and followed for 6 weeks. The effectivity of the treatment was evaluated by monitoring improvement in speech. After the treatment, there was a significant improvement in speech, which needs to ascertained using large sample size and more effective research methodology in future.
